Hawaii Prep grad Grap named Rocky Mountain Player of the Week

Western New Mexico University volleyball senior Leeta Grap — a Hawaii Preparatory Academy grad — was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Monday.

Grap followed up her strong start to the season with another solid offensive effort at the Coyote Classic. She tallied 65 kills, going for 16 or more in three matches with a high of 21 coming twice in the first two matches. She hit over .300 in two of the matches and also added five assists, four service aces, 40 digs and six blocks. She averaged 4.33 kills per set and 2.67 digs per set.

Grap is off to a hot start so far this season with 132 kills over the first eight matches, having played in all 31 sets. She is averaging 4.26 kills per set, while also adding 94 digs (3.03 per set).

WNMU, 5-3 so far on the season, returns home for their home openers this coming Friday and Saturday when they open RMAC play against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday and then play Western State Colorado University on Saturday.

The second annual Ka’u Coffee Trail Run is set for 7 a.m. Sept. 19, with a half-marathon, 10-kilometer and 5K.

All races begin and finish at Ka’u Coffee Mill in Pahala.

Wildcat Golf Challenge

The Club at Hokulia will host the Wildcat Golf Challenge on Nov. 16.

The two best ball-of-four format with a shotgun start costs $250 per golfer to enter.

Entry fee includes a cart and a gift for all golfers.

The event will benefit the interscholastic athletics program at Konawaena High School.

Space is limited and advance reservations can be made by calling the athletic office at Konawaena at 323-4500.

Sunrise Athletics holding runs

Sunrise Athletic will hold a 10-kilometer, 5K run/walk and 1.5-mile keiki fun run at 7:45 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Pana’ewa Park & Gymnasium.

The first 100 individuals to register will have their name placed in drawing for a one night stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort and the early deadline is Oct. 9.
